Zeus, the god of the skies is a friendly and paternal god with a vast over-inflated personal ego. He is clever, dazzling and has a great power of leadership.

He presides over kingship, sky, lightning, and thunder. He also controls the ocean, earthquakes and metals. Hades his brother is the ruler of the underworld.

How did they become Gods?

The Greeks have created a rich mythology that was a blend of early Greek culture as well as pre-Greek Mediterranean beliefs, and other cultures they interspersed with as they conquered and spread across their territories. This was especially relevant to their gods. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades frequently had very similar characters and stories as well as depictions. This could be due to the conventions of art, the fact that the brothers were close or the various stories told in different regions.

Zeus was the first Olympian to overthrow Cronus their father. Cronus was afraid that one of Zeus his siblings would overthrow Cronus and swallow him, ate Zeus and his brothers at birth. Cerberus is often depicted with him, the three-headed canine who guards his territory. He also wears a headgear called the Helm of Darkness, and his weapon is the bident that resembles the trident of Poseidon.

The underworld was seen by the ancient Greeks as spiritual realm, rather than a hellish place. Hades was charged with watching over the souls of mortal men and women who had died and ensuring that divine justice was done for their lives. He also is responsible for creating life and providing rain to those who require it.

Zeus is king of heavens and the leader of the Olympian Gods. He is often depicted with a beard, as well as tridents in his hand. He is a powerful god with a tan complexion. The most well-known story about the two is their romance with Persephone. She was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus and was kidnapped for Hades. Hades fell for her despite her initially reluctance. This caused him to agree with her that he would let her go back to his home in the underworld as long as she spent only a small portion of the year with him.

This was not an easy job as Persephone was entangled with her earthly life and was very reluctant to return to the realm of her father. At last, she accepted the terms of the deal. This is why it was one of the rare occasions when Hades was able to travel above the ground.

During her time with Demeter, she began to disregard her duties as the goddess of fertility. This caused her to be angry with Hades. He decided to get her back. He tricked the girl by changing into the form of a dirty cuckoo. Knowing that she was fond of animals, he held her bird close to her chest and she fell in amour. He then returned to his original form and then mated her.

Hades became a loving father and husband to his three children following the marriage. He was insecure about his place on Mount Olympus. He wanted to be the center for an alteration. He proposed to the gods of the other gods that he bring hell back to the earth. After days of discussion they finally came to an agreement.

Hestia the goddess of peace is also responsible for keeping the other Olympians under control. She is also the patroness of marriage and gives particular care of married women. She was a very religious lady, but she did have a few affairs with Zeus who was the husband of her sister. She had children with mortals and nymphs, including Triton and Theseus.
